Protein & Amino Acids
Overlooked for years, people are starting to realize the dangers of a protein deficient diet. (After water, protein is the most abundant substance in the human body). Skin, hair, nails, eyes, muscles, hormones, enzymes, nerve transmission chemicals, hemoglobin, and antibodies are all made of protein. Without protein, cells could not produce or store energy. Protein also helps slow the rate of entry of carbohydrates into the bloodstream, thereby assuring a steady energy source. The following is an excerpt from "Twelve Points on Grainfields Products", by Prof. Dr. Sir John Whitman Ray:
"(Point 2) Our body requires 20 amino acids in natural form (the dextrorotatory form or d-amino acid) in order that all bodily metabolic functions can operate properly. The adult body requires up to 20 amino acids in order that the endocrine glands can produce and secrete all the necessary hormones for complete cellular functions. If there is one amino acid missing in the diet due to cooking the food we consume, or due to eating processed foods, or due to the inability of the body to digest protein, or eating a protein deficient diet, then certain hormones cannot be produced and secreted by the endocrine glands."

How much protein do you need daily?
(The following recommendations is from the book, "The Power of Superfoods", by Sam Graci, 1999, Prentice-Hall Canada Inc.)
Sedentary adult - 0.4 of a gram per pound of body weight
Active adult - 0.6 of a gram per pound of body weight (exersizing at least three times a week)
Endurance athlete - 0.75 of a gram per pound of body weight (long-distance runner)
Strength athlete - 0.8 of a gram per pound of body weight (avid weight resistance trainer)
Elite athlete - 1.0 gram per pound of body weight
